Fishing on the River Wear at Shincliffe Village, Shincliffe Hall and
Maiden Castle
Please note, with the exception of the very small section within the gardens of Shincliffe Hall, the fishing from the A177 road bridge on the south bank of the river Wear upstream to Butterby Woods is controlled by Durham City Angling Club, as is the fishing on both banks below the road bridge at Maiden Castle
Only D.C.A.C. members, their family and/or guests (to be accompanied by the member) have permission to fish these sections of the river Wear
However, anyone wishing to become a member of D.C.A.C.. can do so for a yearly membership fee of just £50, which includes access to a four lake complex offering specimen carp fishing and is close to Finchale Priory on the banks of the river Wear
When the Hall was owned by the University of Durham and leased by D.C.A.C. members used to fish the water at the edge of the gardens but it was seldom used due to the very poor and dangerous access to the waters edge.
Any non member found fishing D.C.A.C. waters (or the Sanctuary Game Anglers waters on the opposite north bank) will be liable to prosecution under the Theft Act
Guests at Shincliffe Hall should refer to the owners BEFORE attempting to fish upstream or downstream of the ‘estate’ gardens.
‘Shincliffe Hall Estate’ has no interest in the river, land or fishing above or below the Hall and the garden.
The car parking spaces adjacent to the Hall are owned by the Forestry Commission and are reserved solely for use by D.C.A.C. members and their guests
